Crown Green Bowling – I have played since the age of 12 and have won several competitions and awards. I enjoy the competitive as well as social aspects of the sport both of which have helped develop personal strengths such as commitment, responsibility, determination and team leadership. My spare time is largely dominated by IT in some shape or form. I have developed several websites for friends and family as well as creating the website for the Junior Crown Green Bowling League (

Work Experience

2008 Warburtons, Shaw, Lancashire
  • Successfully developed a stores system in Java (as per request) to keep a record of all the machine parts that were in stock.
  • The system is used to keep stock level, perform random stock checks, and allows the engineers to search for a part in the stock and find out exactly where it is.
  • It has added functionality which generates orders when stock level is low.

Taking on this project allowed me to experience firsthand what is required to design and implement a new system. I gained experience in the system development lifecycle including: defining user requirements, establishing regular communication through group meetings, testing and end-user training.

2006 Microsoft UK, Reading

Attended a week’s work placement at Microsoft UK headquarters in Reading, where I:

  • Gained insight into how a large global IT company is organized from Sales and Marketing to Technical Support
  • Experienced the day-to-day aspects of a technical support role by assisting in the testing of peripheral compatibility for a new software release.
  • Experienced the enormous difference between a large IT supplier and a smaller IT department such as that of Warburtons.

2004 Warburtons, Shaw, Lancashire

Spent 2 weeks work experience shadowing members of the plant maintenance team at one of the Warburtons bakery plants. Gained experience in:

  • Application of analytical skills needed to solve engineering problems.
  • Working under pressure to solve problems when production line is down and factory is potentially losing money
  • The need to exercise good communication and team skills when attending to production breakdowns
  • The need to plan time and materials in advance of execution.

Overall my experience not only showed me essential skills for a production maintenance engineer but also how these skills can be carried over to the IT function, for example technical support engineer.
